6 Tips for Amazing Engagement Photos

engagement-photographer-traverse-cityEngagement photography sessions is one of the most important steps in your wedding planning process. It allows you to meet your photographer, get a feel for each other’s styles and comfortable levels, and gives you solid one-on-one advice and instruction on how to pose and feel natural in front of the camera, before your big day.

What’s the No.1 biggest mistake that engaged couples make but don’t realize it?

Not booking an engagement photography session!! Trust me, you do NOT want your trial and error photo session to be on the day of your wedding.

Here are 10 easy tips for your engagement photography session, and learn how to have fun, create beautiful pictures, and get the most out of your time!

TIP #1 – PICK A GREAT LOCATION

Finding fun locations can lend a unique and exciting tone to your engagement photography session. I recommend picking 2-3 locations that either have sentimental value to you, are incredibly romantic (think sunsets on the beach) or that correlate with your wedding theme (rustic, vintage, outdoors, urban, etc.) Choosing locations that you both agree upon, will lend more value to your photos and you’ll be able to preserve and compliment your great memories, with all your stunning pictures!

TIP #2 – BRING DECOR OR PETS

Nothing is cuter than bringing your dog, or cat, or even your rabbit (yes, I saw this once!) to your engagement portraits. Pets are fun, energetic, and bring out true smiles and emotions from you guys, so they can help lighten the mood and create authentic, happy engagement pictures! Plus it is a sneaky way to get great photos of your dog bouncing around, ears flopping, and looking happy as heck!

TIP #3 – PICK CLOTHING THAT CORRELATES WITH THE STYLE OF YOUR LOCATION

This is one of the most popular questions that I get asked and my answer is simply: pick natural or neutral tones that compliment your hair and skin tones, without drawing too much attention. Your outfits are meant to compliment you, not take over all the attention. Avoid anything too bright like neons, florescence, etc.

Also take into account your surroundings. If you are going to the beach for your engagement photos, consider wearing complimentary colors, like blues, whites, grey, taupe, etc. Of if you are going to be in a grassy field, wear browns, taupes, purples, etc.

Each photographer will have different requirements or limitations on how many outfits changes you are allowed, but personally, I recommend 2-3. This will allow you to express several different styles without taking up half of the session time for changing.

TIP #4 – PICK ACTIVITIES YOU LIKE TO DO TOGETHER

Do you guys like to go rock hunting together? Do you guys enjoy wineries? Feel free to incorporate your hobbies or activities that you love doing together, in your engagement session! It makes your photos completely unique to you and helps define your relationship together – how many times in your life will you be able to capture the places that capture your heart, with your soulmate?

TIP #5 – POSING TIPS

It’s very true that practice makes perfect, and that the more your turn in your mirror and look at how other models tilt their head or place their hands on their hips, will help define how you stand as well. There are several quick and easy tips to looking fabulous in all your photos, flattering your body type, and feeling confident in all your photos!

TIP #6 – GET YOUR HAIR & MAKEUP DONE

This is one of those tips that isn’t necessary, but can help boost your confidence! Feeling beautiful is so important when posing in front of the camera. Because if you can FEEL confident, poised, and completely at ease with who you are and what your relationship is like, your true personality will simply shine!

Not to mention it will help preserve your elegant style for (hopefully) the entire session! Photographing in northern Michigan can bring it’s own set of weather difficulties (wind, humidity, etc) but hiring a professional hair stylist and makeup artists can help prevent your “look” from depleting too quickly!
