One of the biggest wedding trends of the season is to let your bridesmaids pick their own dresses. Instead of the traditional matching ladies and their groomsmen, some brides are opting to give their friends more freedom and give them the reigns!

PROS

• Your Bridesmaids Are Happy –

  Simply put, a happy wedding party creates for a more harmonious wedding planning stage, a more fun wedding day, and as a result, more exciting and memorable wedding photos. Being surrounded by happy people is KEY to having a wonderful, stress-free wedding day. And since your bridesmaids are very involved from the moment they are chosen, to the culmination of the day, it is important to keep them happy and excited to be your support system.

• Your Wedding Party is More Comfortable –

  No girl likes to spend the day in an outfit, feeling uncomfortable and therefore, anxious. Solve this problem by letting them pick a dress that fits their size and body type, so that they feel more comfortable being around your guests and helping you out, on your wedding day.

• You Are Respecting Everyone’s Budget –

  Weddings cost money for everyone, not just for you and your groom. Dresses, jewelry, good, travel, etc are just some of the expenses your bridesmaids invest in your wedding. Show that you respect them and their individual needs, by letting them choose a dress that is affordable for their personal lifestyle. They will thank you for this, I promise!

• Your Bridesmaids Feel Valued –

  Simply put, it is human nature to feel wanted and loved. If your bridesmaids are given a little “say” in their dresses, they will feel that their opinion matters to you, and that will make your relationship all warm and fuzzy!

CONS

• Untraditional –

  Many weddings are based on tradition, and as a bride, you are used to visualizing the “standard” magical day of your dream wedding, which has typically included your bridesmaids in cute, matching dresses. It’s nerve-racking straying from the vision, so if you’d like to stay within the safety zone of tradition, this might be the way to go!

• Fear of the “Mismatched” Look –

  This is certainly a valid concern. Even if you give your bridesmaids parameters, there are so many different shades and styles, and fabrics, it’s hard to trust so many other people, with fulfilling your own vision. The last thing you want, is your wedding party photographs to look “messy.”

PARAMETERS TO KEEP IN MIND:

• Dress Length –

  Make sure you specify the length of the dress that you want. HINT: keep them all the same length!

• Offer a Color Palette (with pictures for reference) –

  Even if you say that you want “navy blue” for bridesmaids dresses, there are so many varying shades of this color (or any color) that it is important to supply their color palette with pictures so that they have a reference to compare their chosen dress with.

• Keep Jewelry the Same for Consistency –

  One way to keep your bridesmaids still looking like bridesmaids, is to match their jewelry. This will keep the wedding photos from looking TOO mismatched, and still keep their budget concerns low.

• Be Specific About Shoes –

  If you decide to let bridesmaids wear their own pick of shoes, follow the same guidelines for choosing their dresses: Specific heel height, color palette, and type of fabric.

• Set Parameters for Details ie. Lace Required, Cotton Only, Etc. –

  Keeping the styles of their dresses the same, are very important. If you have a vintage inspired wedding, require that your dresses all are covered in lace. Or perhaps, you don;t want any dresses to have tulle. Whatever your requirements, make sure these are also reflected in the visuals you supply your bridesmaids.
