DIY Chic Wedding Brooch Bouquet & Boutonnieres

Traverse-City-MI-Wedding-Photographer-004

DIY weddings are some of the most fun and creative styles that you can find – and they made for beautiful wedding pictures to have and hold for many years to come! And with weddings becoming so costly, it is exciting to try and find ways to save a little. That’s what my bride, Hannah Bauer set out to do, when planning her DIY wedding bouquet!

Check out her story and advice below on how to make a DIY brooch bouquet for your wedding (and make sure you read all the way to the end for directions on how she did it!)

“Even before I got a handle on how expensive wedding bouquets and flowers could be, I already knew that I wanted to do a brooch bouquet. From the first time I saw one (even before Pinterest!) I knew that was my dream bouquet, not flowers. The main incentive for me was that I wanted to be able to keep my bouquet forever and I wanted it to look just as perfect 50 years later as it did on my wedding day. Pinterest, however, was how i decided to make my own boutonnieres and corsages, I saw one on Pinterest that I loved and decided I could replicate it.

I started with a necklace that was my grandmother’s that she had given me before she passed away, I knew I wanted that to be a focal point (it was the gold flowers that swagged in the front). Then I started looking for pendants, rings, bulky earrings, etc in my color palette. Most of what I got was from craft stores or the clearance section of fashion jewelry. I probably only bought a dozen or so before we decided to ask people to bring something to my shower. I wrote up a little ditty to put in the invitations for my wedding shower:

to help fill her bouquet with sparkle and bling.

Keep in mind her colors are pink and gold,

give her something special to have and to hold.

Add to your gift a brooch, pendant, or whatever,

So she has a piece of your on her walk towards forever!

traverse city wedding photographer“As far as making sure they would all look good together, aside from asking for them in my colors I didn’t do much. Some were very different styles than others, but instead of making it look eclectic, it really just all blended together. Ones I really liked or were sentimental, I made more prominent and others just created a nice soft background for the statement pieces.

“I did use some tutorials to get me going on assembling it, but it was also a lot of trial and error. This was the main tutorial I drew from:

But the key thing from that tutorial was making the stems, and that’s what I did. I started by removing and backing that would get in the way and then I took wire (I used floral wire for most of them and jewelry wire for the ones where I had to come through the front of the brooch to stabilize it. Once they all had stems wrapped in floral tape, I bunched together 3-5 brooches that I thought looked good together, usually one big one and a couple medium to small ones, and floral taped them together. Then I started in the middle wrapped a couple bunches together, then added bunches around them and wrapped it again. I continued this process all the way out from the center, making sure I kept the bouquet round and that the edges curved down. Once I had it all together, I wrapped and wrapped and wrapped it in floral tape and then electrical tape to make sure they were secure and to build an attractive handle. Then I covered the bottom of the “stems” with satin ribbon and used the same ribbon to cover the handle. It was a long process, but having one or two helpers who can make stems and help hold it while you wrap it makes it pretty manageable. Thank you Maid of Honor/Sister/Wedding Slave!

traverse city wedding photographer“I seriously could not be happier with how it turned out. It was sentimental, totally unique, and looks absolutely stunning displayed in our apartment. Same with the boutonnieres, even though they were a lot of work too, I have Zach’s in a shadow box and it looks perfect still. Aside from all those reasons, DIYing this part of our wedding saved us, literally, hundreds of dollars. I felt like this was one area where the cheaper option absolutely did not compromise what I wanted, plus it gave me plenty of crafts to fill my time before wedding day!” – Hannah Bauer, Traverse City Michigan
